Two-Zero-One-Two

OK…It’s Two-thousand twelve, shouldn’t we all be dead by now, or floating in space, like the villains in Superman II?  Oh wait, that’s right, that’s not supposed to happen until the END of the year.  In the meantime, does Tim Tebow save the world while leading the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl.  Did the Mayans predict that, too?  Or Nostradamus? Or the book of Revelation?  Or the book of Mormon?

One thing is for sure, I don’t think anyone in their right (wing) mind could have predicted how bad this Republican field is.  Or how screwed everything and everyone of us is at the moment?  Regardless of what happens in November, everyone will be disappointed in something that didn’t go their way.

In the meantime the Republicans seem hell-bent on nominating someone who can’t possibly win.  And destroying themselves in the process.  If Ron Paul, who could be a grandfather to some people who seem to support him, decides to run for President as a third-party candidate, the GOP is toast.  If Jon Huntsman runs as an independent, the GOP is screwed and if the nutball from another dimension runs, well, in the immortal words of Dandy Don Meridith, “Turn out the lights, the party’s over.”

I think now, everyone gets it.  There’s nothing left.  78 million Baby Boomers and by 2035, nothing.  No medicare, medicaid, social security.  Nothing.  Doesn’t matter who’s President or in Congress anymore.  The policies and laws that have been in place since Reagan and the attitudes that have been around since the 1960’s won’t change.  The massive transfer of wealth is just about complete.  There will be no middle class by 2035.  By the time the last of the Boomers hit 65, in 2029, there might still be between 50-60 million of us still alive.  And that’s 17 years from now.  The oldest of our generation will be 83.  And who knows how many older than that.  I fully expect the Rolling Stones will still be touring in 17 years.

Laugh if you want, but i’m not far off.  People far smarter than me are predicting that no matter what, money will win.  Which leaves us high and dry and stocking up on what?  Hope?  America has no hope.  That died in the 60’s.  Two weeks before he died, Malcolm X said the next revolution won’t be about race, it will involve class.  What he didn’t see was the Lazy America we have become.  The “Kick-the-Can” Generation.  The over-protective, never-trust-anyone generation.  The fear everything and everyone Generation.  There won’t be a revolution because we are too lazy to get off our collective butts and demand that things change.  We’d rather still buy into the notion that we are the greatest country in the world.  And watch the pretty people on TV sing and dance and lie to us about everything.  And keep us buying.  Buying soap, food, cars, TV’s, computers and the bullshit.

We were going to change things, remember?  Well, guess what?  We changed things, screwed ourselves.  Went after the easy money, the good life.  Now, that dream is turning into a Darwin nightmare where only the rich and the connected will be lucky to afford even basics, like food.

And the Republicans are set to nominate the epitome of greed.  A real life Gordon Gekko, a “Larry the liquidator,” replete with the slicked back hair and the picture perfect family who is about as sincere as the roulette table at Ric’s Cafe American, except Willard Romney is more likely to be Captain Renault than Rick Blaine.  He is a vulture and a man who is so duplicitous that it makes even his “supporters” think twice.

Either way you look at it, this doesn’t bode well for this year, or beyond.  However, unlike the end of “Casablanca”, don’t expect anyone to become noble.  Or grow a backbone.  Maybe the Mayans have a point after all.

Interesting that Malcolm X said that – he was very wise. Definitely agree – America is totally on its way downhill, much like Rome during its falling days. Instead of lions vs. Christians in the Coliseum we have reality TV. It’s pretty much the same thing – anything to distract the vast majority of the apathetic public from noticing the crumbling infrastructure and crumbling country around them.

Maybe Romney is more like the guy who ran the roulette wheel at Rick’s – he just let anyone win when his boss told him to.

Play 22 and keep it there.

    Kent,
Your right about the all the Baby Boomer generation by 2029 being retired with no one working to support the social security system or any other retirement. Right now GM has more retirees than active workers..How long can a company last like that. I have one thing to say about that problem “ABORTION”

At the rate of 3,000 abortions being done everyday in the United States how is our society every going to grow large enough to support the older generations, that are in retirement.
When social security began I think there was 100 workers for every 1 retiree. Now it is more like 7 to 1. Women have the right to chose, but like every action there is a consequence. Back in the 70’s when they legalized Abortation, the death of are nation began!

Tom, in the immortal words of me “What?” Abortion? No, Tom. That has very little to do with the reality of today’s world. This is what happened. The Religious Right got a hold of the Republican Party and turned politics into a moral rather than practical matter. Goldwater, who wouldn’t be welcome in today’s GOP, even warned about it. I’m paraphrasing here, but he said something to the effect that politics is compromise. When you put religion into it, there is no compromise. Everyone screams “Obamacare,” but the reality is, it isn’t. It’s Nixon’s watered-down version of what he wanted back in 1970. “Death panels?” Caribou Barbie made that one up. End of life care. Shit, those are death panels? That’s what i’m going through right now with my dad. In Canada. But in the bubble, he’s Barack X, and he’s a secret muslim and he’s apologizing to everyone and palling around with terrorists and taking marching orders from some dead guy named Saul Alinsky. Here’s something for you to read…
