Random Thoughts on a Random (Fat) Tuesday.
I don’t remember the last time I went to a movie. Maybe 2009. Too expensive and with Netflix, Premium channels and streaming, I don’t need to.
I’m not interested in the Academy Awards that much anymore. Their attempts to get “modern” have failed and the films that people go to see are never the ones that get nominated, let alone win.
The people we admired and loved in the 60’s and 70’s – are now in their 60’s and 70’s. Or older.
In 10 years, all this will be obsolete. But we will never be able to erase what is on the Internet.
Jeremy Lin. We’ll see.

“Luck” is the best show on TV. Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, Nick Nolte.
Those of us who grew up in the 60’s and 70’s couldn’t fathom paying $20,000 a year to go to college. Neither could our parents. But that’s the reality of today.
In a few years, a college degree might not matter, that’s the scary part.
Whitney Houston. Great talent. Beautiful voice. Married the wrong guy. It wasn’t crack that killed her. It was the crap around her. And Bobby Brown is still crap.
People need to surround themselves with those they can trust. Doesn’t matter if you’re a celebrity or not, you need to surround yourself with people who you can trust. Otherwise, left to your own devices, you’re toast.
The problem is that today, everyone says stuff, but no one means it. “Taken out of context” seems to be the catch-phrase of the times. I don’t care about any of it, whether you’re a friend or whoever, you can’t change it once it’s out there.
Corporations are not people, folks.
A fact: 100 years ago, Republicans were the progressives, the liberals. The Democrats were the obstructionists. That’s why Teddy Roosevelt remains my favorite President. He took on the trusts, created our national parks, saved college sports, did more as an “accidental President”, then just about anyone. But following the 1912 election, the GOP has morphed into what it has becomes today.
My favorite guilty pleasure – “Doomsday Preppers” on National Geographic. Some of those people are kinda normal, but it seems to me that most are just old hippies.
I miss George Carlin. He warned us about all this, but he would be having fun with all these jokers right now, that’s for sure.
Other guilty pleasure…”Eastbound and Down”. Kenny Fucking Powers!!!

Hey Kent: I have a couple of random responses to your random thoughts:..
I always thought that “Fat Tuesday” was the day in New Jersey when Chris Christie vetoes legislation.
I probably haven’t gone to a movie in 15 years. The last one I saw at a theater was so disappointing and so shitty that it finished me. It was supposed to be a remake of the Lee Marvin classic, “Point Blank.” It was called, “Payback,” and it starred Mel Gibson.
Enough said.
I hate to say it, but 1960 was 52 years ago so, if you admired a performer in the early 1960’s, and if he or she is, say, 69 today, they could not have been older than 19 or 20 when you were admiring them.
You really think that “Luck” is better than “Burn Notice?” Or were you just anticipating the Colts’ next quarterback?
$20,000 a year for college? When the UC Regents reversed their initial decision and reclassified me as a non-resident of California, thereby causing my first year law school scholarship to be automatically canceled, I thought I wouldn’t be able to attend law school. The tuition would have been $450 per quarter or $1350 for the entire first year. It might as well have been a million.
As for Whitney Houston, Bill O’Reilly is an idiot. But he’s a minor league cream puff next to those morons, John and Ken, who sully right wing radio here.
If people should surround themselves with people they can trust, what do the residents of Washington D.C. do since there’s NO ONE in that cesspool that’s worthy of the slightest degree of trust?
I don’t mind the phrase, “taken out of context,” that much. The expression that I HATE the most is “been there, done that.” Ugh. And, for our friends in the football announcing booths, I detest the dreaded “two- and three-headed monster.” I also hate it when they yell, “He’s wide open,” when the receiver has the D-back beaten by a step or a step and a half. When I started watching football, “wide open” meant that there were no D-backs on screen.
I wish I could share your appreciation for Teddy Roosevelt, but, sorry, I can’t get excited about a president who “saved college sports.” Without him, I could be well into retirement by now 🙂
